Buddleja davidii jest krzewem o rozłożystym pokroju. W zależności od odmiany osiąga wysokość od 60-250 cm. Liście jajowato-lancetowate, ciemnozielone, od spodu biało owłosione, jesienią opadają. Końce pędów zwisają pod ciężarem kwiatostanów. Pachnące kwiaty, w zależności od odmiany białe, różowe, niebieskie, fioletowe lub purpurowe zebrane są w długie wiechy do 20 cm długości. Charakterystyczną cechą kwiatu budlei jest pomarańczowe „oczko” w środku kwiatu. Kwitnienie przypada w zależności od odmiany na okres od czerwca do października. Kwiaty dzięki wydzielanemu nektarowi przyciągają "roje" motyli, stąd krzew potocznie nazywany jest motylim krzewem. Roślina wytwarza kwiatostany na tegorocznych pędach stąd wymaga silnego przycięcia na wiosnę. Krzew dobrze rośnie na glebie przepuszczalnej, żyznej, gliniasto-piaszczystej, lekko wilgotnej, o odczynie zbliżonym do obojętnego. Podczas suszy budleja Dawida wymaga podlewania. Polecana jest do ogrodów przydomowych, na trawnik jako soliter oraz do kompozycji na rabaty. Na zimę wymaga okrycia.
