Kosaciec niski dorasta do 35 (40) cm wysokości i charakteryzuje się wczesnym terminem kwitnienia od kwietnia do maja. W ogrodach spotyka się różne jego odmiany, które różnią się barwą kwiatów (od białego, żółtego, różowego do fioletowego) oraz żyłkowaniem. Pędy kwiatostanowe, na których wyrastają 1-2 kwiaty, po przekwitnięciu należy wyciąć u ich nasady, aby uniknąć tworzenia nasion, które roślinę osłabiają. Rośliny najlepiej kwitną, gdy rosną na stanowiskach słonecznych, na glebie suchej do średnio wilgotnej, dobrze zdrenowanej, żyznej, raczej ubogiej w próchnicę, ale zasobnej w składniki mineralne. Gdy gleba jest stale wilgotna i nieprzepuszczalna, albo rośliny wysadzone są w cieniu wówczas bardzo szybko atakowane są przez choroby bakteryjne i grzybowe. Rośliny charakteryzują się wzniesionymi, szablastymi, sztywnymi, szarozielonymi, liśćmi. Niskie kosaćce można sadzić na rabatach kwiatowych, w ogródku skalnym lub w pojemnikach.
